Point Chevalier Bungalow

This renovation of a modest bungalow explores the spatial possibilities afforded by the shallow Californian gable roof form. 

The route along the hall to the rear living spaces is characterised by a gradual opening up to the gable form in plan and section. Beyond the porch and entry some way along the hall, the flat ceiling of the old bungalow steps up to express the sloping gable form of the roof. Further along the hall a wall gives way to be replaced by a cabinetry screen, and finally the floor steps down to fully reveal a surprising chapel-like volume at the rear. This spatial progression occurs under a modest extension of the existing roof.

Beneath the simple roof, we were interested to create a rich internal landscape of living spaces. A darker more enclosed living space at the higher level allows a refuge and look out point into the open plan living room. The cabinetry screen and full height internal joinery creates an interweaving of spaces.
