Eden Terrace Home

Auckland, Eden Terrace – 2022

This project renovates and extends a small inner city workers’ cottage for a family of 5.

The old core of the cottage now houses 4 bedrooms. A flat roofed link (housing the bathrooms and laundry), leads to the new kitchen/ dining/ living spaces.

These are formed under a new cranked roof opening high to a clerestory allowing light from the north, and then tipping more gently to open to the garden.

This expressive roof is the heart of the renovated house, creating a generous warm space which links the old cottage to the garden.

Zones of activity in the living areas are defined but open to the whole space. A wide play seat doubles as a bed for guests.

The dark tones of Abodo thermally modified timber ceiling linings accentuate the cranked form of the roof.

The Abodo is off- set by the lighter tones of the American oak veneer plywood and cork flooring, creating a sense of warmth that brings the outside environment to the interior.

At the change in ceiling pitch, spaced Abodo battens allow incorporation of sound absorptive polyester blanket. This battening pattern extends to the covered outdoor area, linking inside to outside.

The renovation features natural materials throughout including extensive use of sustainably sourced renewable timbers that sequester approximately 4T of carbon. The exterior of the extension features Abodo Vulcan thermally modified timber cladding, decking, soffits paneling and ceiling battens. Interior finishing features selectively harvested American oak and Abodo Vulcan timbers on the ceilings as well as a laminated Rimu benchtop that was recycled from the old kitchen.

The integration of garden and living spaces were critical to making the most of this small site.

A narrow deck and retaining wall incorporating steps and seat, all clad in the same decking, flow into a more generous covered area. This zone creates sufficient outdoor living, while leaving as much of the garden as possible for Zoe Carafice’s lush and practical design.

The scheme is minimal, spatially efficient but rich in experience. The living spaces are well proportioned in relation to the important garden space they address.
